Virtually every culture across the world considers the lady bug to be a symbol of both luck and good fortune. In Belgium, people once believed that if a ladybug crawled across a young lady’s hand it was a symbol of a happy marriage within the year. Some Asian cultures it is believed that the ladybug understands human speech and has been blessed by God. In Switzerland people tell their young children that they were brought to them as babies by ladybugs, much like the American tale of of the stork! These beautiful mythos are some of the reasons why ladybug gifts for baby, especially a lady bug blankie, are so precious to us. Of course, the special symbols of ladybug gifts are equally as strong for big kids.
One of the most used and treasured gifts that we received for our little girl was a swaddling lady bug blankie. She loved the warmth and security of being tightly wrapped in her adorable ladybug blankie just as much as we loved seeing her in it. As she aged it was used as a stroller and receiving blanket, to endless compliments and coos from our friends and family. We also have a Ladybug Hugs blankie for her. It’s half soft blankie and half plush lady bug toy. She plays with it endlessly, even now that she’s toddling around with other little kids. My only regret is that we didn’t get one that was personalized with her name and birthday to make it even more special.
Now that she’s the size of other big kids, she has a set of adorable, cute and comfortable kids ladybug pajamas. (Which she calls her nini bugs!) With both embroidery and applique lady bug details on preshrunk cotton she lives in them. The fact that they are machine washable and safe in the dryer is a lifesaver for me as every day she seems to find a way to make more messes!
“If a ladybug is held in the hand while making a wish, the direction that is flies away shows where your luck will come from.” This is one of my absolute favorite ladybug stories, and perhaps one of the reason why our darling Daughter’s room has lady bug toys, plushies, blankies, bags and pictures all over. I want her to have luck from every direction, and is something you can tell the parents next time you give ladybug gifts for baby.
